My Latest Passion Project: Founder’s Therapy

In life, there are times when things get rough, and we want someone to simply listen while we bare our souls (shoulda listened when adults told us, as kids,  that getting older sucks). The people who sit back, and don’t say a word are like a gift from God. At the end of the conversation, we usually feel alot better. Like a burden has been lifted off our shoulders.

But as a company founder, oftentimes we want someone who has been through the wars, and can feel our pain. The Hero’s Journey is relatively unique, and when you cross paths with a fellow warrior, it can be instant magic.

This is where my latest passion project, Founder’s Therapy, comes into play. If only for my own sanity, I’ll organize a small group of founders for conversation over drinks centered around the human element of the entrepreneurial experience. You know, the actual life part about being a founder. A subset of typical issues include:

  • Non-supportive family & friends
  • Choosing co-founders and key employees
  • Sacrifice of your personal life (relationships, kids, family, friends)
  • Living on a Founder’s Salary/Ramen profitability
  • Embracing risk and failure
  • Dealing with physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual exhaustion
  • Major mistakes made
  • Reliance on faith (or lack thereof)
  • The Reality Distortion Field
  • The slap of reality
  • Fundraising
  • Sources of motivation
  • Roller coaster of emotions

Entrepreneurship is not a glamour job as many make it out to be. Yeah, you read/hear/watch the stories of those who made it big. But the ugly reality is that for every one founder who reaches the mountaintop, there are 5,000 more that don’t.

And all 5,001 of these people experience hardship along the way.

And, even worse, we feel as if we are the only ones going through these issues.

Not anymore. I’ll keep you posted on the first therapy session. Let me know if you want to participate.
