A Personal Note About The Importance of #ATLCLASSIC Weekend

For details of my events/guest lists next week, go here.

I’ve been around HBCU’s all my life (will explain the backstory later). In fact, my first website in 1999 was BlackCollegeExperience.com. Originally from Alabama, many of my pre-college experiences involve schools from the SWAC and Tuskegee.

I get black colleges, but the Atlanta Football Classic Weekend is larger than FAMU and Southern.

It is about Atlanta, and all that it offers to African-Americans regardless of school/education level: a strong professional base, plenty of entertainment options, and unparelled black cultural experiences.

The game itself is simply a backdrop to it all. It is what brings the community together. The weekend should play out like this:

– Thursday 9/22: Alumni from all schools (FAMU, Southern, other HBCU’s, & non-HBCU’s) converge for a relaxing mixer/party in an effort to understand what the African-American experience is like at other people’s schools over great food/drinks.

– Friday 9/23: This is where the real partying begins, and Atlantans show the out-of-towners what our clubs are really like – from the people, to our dress, to the music, and even, yes, bottle poppin’.

– Saturday 9/24: The game is where everyone else gets to see how FAMU and Southern really get down. The game, bands, and people will be a sight to see. The chance the experience another school’s culture should never be taken for granted. And the after party is where everyone lets it all loose until 2012.

Atlanta Classic Young Alumni Events:
+ Coors Light 6pm Playground for Black Alumni @ Luckie Food Lounge Sky Deck [Thursday 0922]
+ FAMUANS in Entertainment Private Dinner [Friday 0923]
+ Coors Light This.Is.Atlanta: Black Hollywood @ Compound Nightclub [Friday 0923]
+ Crown Royal Black presents Society of the Crown @ Grand Atrium at 200 Peachtree [Saturday 0924]

Have a great weekend, and I’ll see you next week.
