This is a part of my series on addressing my follower’s perceptions of the problems with events in Tallahassee, FL for young professionals.

Generally, there are three main components of awesome events: people, place, and music. We’ll discuss music here.

As part of our concept development methodology for the new Thursdays at Cafe Cabernet, the quality of music has come up again and again…and again.

The feedback reflects the samples below:

Creating A Definition

Now, what’s quality to me might not be quality to you. And vice versa. In addition to 1980 – 2001 era hip hop, and R&B, I also like rock, pop, soul, and house. You might think that’s some complete BS. Alternatively, you might consider Gucci Mane and Nicki Minaj completely awesome. I do not.

It’s all about setting expectations, and we need a standard definition. What type of music do you consider “quality”? Please provide specific artists as examples.

Quality music is music that delivers at the highest standard on three components: arrangement, vocal quality, and lyrical composition. Good music with quality production that has a message and not a gimmic. Artists like Eric Roberson, Dwele, Raheem DeVaughn, Little Brother, Foreign Exchange, Tortured Soul, Q-Tip, The Roots, Choklate, Teedra Moses, Erykah Badu, Drake, Andre 3000, Janita, Carmen Rodgers, Lalah Hathaway, Talib Kweli, Melanie Fiona, Green Day, Maroon 5, Marvin Gaye, Luther Vandross, Joe, Earth Wind & Fire, Reel People, Lisa Shaw, Louie Vega, Osulande Yoruba, Jesse Boykins III, Maxwell, Rick Ross, Black Milk, Royce da 5’9″, Raphael Saadiq. These are my examples of good music…hope this helps

@jb: nice feedback. that’s a pretty impressive (and diverse) list
